The Tuberculosis Sanatorium

The Tuberculosis Sanatorium – isolated with care

In the early 1900s, tuberculosis was a widespread and feared disease – also among the residents of Brejning. The hospital at Asylgården had several patients infected with tuberculosis, and since the disease was highly contagious, it soon became clear that a special solution had to be found.

In 1917, a separate tuberculosis sanatorium was therefore built – a small, isolated building with room for 15 residents. The purpose was to protect both the sick and the healthy: the sick received peace and specialised care, while the rest of the institution was shielded from infection.

The sanatorium was placed at a good distance from the other buildings and reflected the medical ideals of the time: light, air, and cleanliness. Stays here were often long, and many of the residents were never allowed to return to the regular wards.

The tuberculosis sanatorium bears witness both to the health views of the time and to the institution's willingness to adapt – even when it came to the most vulnerable.
