The Professor’s Residence

The Professor’s Residence – The Heart of the Institution from the Beginning
The Professor’s Residence is one of the first two buildings constructed as part of the new institution for people with intellectual disabilities in Brejning. Together with the Men’s Home down by the fjord, it was completed in 1900 and marked the beginning of what would become an entire institutional town.
The name “Professor’s Residence” comes from the fact that this was where the institution’s founder, Professor Christian Keller, lived with his family. However, the house was more than just a private residence – in its early years, it also served as the administrative centre of the institution. From here, daily operations were managed, decisions were made, and the vision for the pioneering project in Brejning was shaped.
Originally, the building was modest in size, but by 1933 an extension became necessary. The growing institution required more space, and the expansion gave the Professor’s Residence the appearance we recognise today – solid, elegant, and with a certain gravitas that reflects its central role within the institution.
Today, the building is a private residence.
