The Comwell hotel chain has today published its ESG report for 2025. Among other things, the report documents an 8% reduction in CO₂ emissions and emphasises that sustainability work is very much about people – including employees, guests and partners. At Comwell, ESG is not just a matter of the environment and figures, but of creating a responsible business with people at its heart.
“It is a strategic choice for us to work purposefully with ESG. We want to run a responsible business with a focus on both people and the environment, whilst ensuring transparency regarding our efforts. ESG is very much about people. About how we run our business, how we treat one another, and how we take responsibility for the world we are part of,” says Peter Schelde, CEO of Comwell Hotels.
A green transition with a focus on people
Comwell is working on issues such as CO₂ reduction, food waste, energy consumption and waste sorting.
The green transition is also about the everyday behaviour and choices of staff and guests. A new partnership with Coor Denmark, supported by Plantefonden, aims to strengthen skills in the kitchens whilst inspiring guests to choose more plant-based dishes, which benefit both the body and the climate.
“We don’t just want to reduce our carbon footprint, but also to engage people in the change. When both staff and guests become part of the effort, it helps to create understanding and commitment, and in this way we can make a real difference,” says Mai-Britt Jensen, HR & Sustainability Director at Comwell Hotels.
Well-being, development and room for diversity
Employees are a key driving force behind Comwell’s ESG work. That is why the company invests in training, skills development and well-being across the organisation. These initiatives include internal training programmes, flexible working arrangements, late-career support, a focus on psychological safety, and the use of the Solsikkesnoren scheme. At the same time, Comwell actively promotes inclusion and diversity, with over 55 nationalities represented in its workforce.
“We work on both attracting and retaining our talented staff. We want to create the best possible environment and be a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard and has the opportunity to thrive and develop. This is crucial for both our culture and our results,” says Mai-Britt Jensen.
The focus on people is also evident beyond the company’s own ranks. Comwell has been working with the SMIL Foundation for more than 10 years, and in 2025 Comwell launched a new partnership with the Julemærkefonden to support the wellbeing of children and young people.
Accountability throughout the value chain
Comwell works to ensure fair conditions and responsible conduct throughout the value chain. By 2025, the company’s Code of Conduct will have been sent to its largest suppliers, and the aim is for all suppliers to have been audited by 2030.
“Responsibility is also about the relationships we enter into. We have high internal standards and we also set requirements for our partners because we want to take responsibility – not just for our own operations, but for the entire value chain,” says Mai-Britt Jensen.
ESG as a driving force for the future
Although Comwell is not subject to any legal requirements regarding ESG reporting, the company uses the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) as a guideline and actively works to meet high international standards such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Comwell has also submitted its targets to the SBTi and is now awaiting a response.
For Comwell, responsibility, business and, indeed, people are closely intertwined.
“We have achieved solid results in 2025, and this provides a good foundation for our future work. We believe that a strong business is built through responsibility and a focus on people. That is why we will continue to develop our ESG efforts with ambitious targets and concrete actions,” says Peter Schelde.
