A month as a hotel manager: A fresh perspective and plenty of energy
My first month as hotel manager at Comwell Rebild Bakker has been full of new experiences, meetings with staff and an insight into a large family-owned Danish hotel chain.
By bringing housekeeping in-house at five hotels on Zealand, Comwell is taking on the task itself in order to strengthen team spirit, quality and staff well-being.
There are new and exciting developments afoot at the Zealand hotels belonging to the Danish family-owned hotel chain Comwell Hotels. The hotel chain has decided to insource housekeeping operations at its four Zealand hotels: Comwell Borupgaard, Comwell Holte, Comwell Copenhagen Portside and Comwell Køge Strand.
Comwell Roskilde has already had in-house housekeeping for many years, and the model is also used at two hotels in Jutland.
This means saying goodbye to external partners in this area and extending a warm welcome to many new employees at Comwell, who are joining the group of hotels with in-house housekeeping.
“We see this insourcing as a great opportunity to set a new, unified direction, where housekeeping becomes a fully integrated part of the hotels. By keeping everything in-house, we can invest more directly in our employees’ wellbeing and training from day one. This creates closer synergy in our day-to-day operations, and we look forward to welcoming a large number of new, talented colleagues,” says Mai-Britt Jensen, Chief People & Sustainability Officer at Comwell.
At Comwell Køge Strand, a new Housekeeping Manager, Christina Maria Leth Thøgersen, is spearheading the major changes. As the role was only created this summer, she is herself relatively new to the hotel:
“It’s a lovely place with a great atmosphere. I’ve been made to feel very welcome, and it’s been just like joining a big family.”
Her first task has been to recruit staff and build the department from scratch, which gives her the opportunity to shape the culture from day one.
“We’ve had loads of great applicants, and we’ve put the team together. Everyone gets the same induction, everyone can carry out the same tasks, we can be flexible and help one another, so I’m sure it’ll be a success. It’s a win-win,” she says.
When reception, kitchen, technical services and housekeeping work under one roof, the conditions are better for swift and seamless cross-departmental communication.
At the same time, the induction can be tailored to ensure that new colleagues are warmly welcomed and thoroughly introduced to Comwell’s quality standards.
“Being in-house makes a huge difference, because we immediately become part of Comwell’s strong culture and values. You feel included and have a better sense of both your own hotel and the entire group. We work as a team, and we share the same common goal of giving guests the very best experience,” says Christina Maria Leth Thøgersen.
Some hotels began operating under the new structure on 1 September, whilst others will follow suit on 1 October. Before then, a joint kick-off event with training will be held.
“We’ve had a lot on our plate over the summer, as setting up a new department involves a great deal of work. We’ve had to order equipment, linen and cleaning products, and there are many details and technicalities to sort out. But we’ve got it all sorted now, so we’re more than ready to welcome our guests. We’re really looking forward to it,” concludes Christina Maria Leth Thøgersen.
